Kirup Valley Farms is a family owned-and-operated
mixed farm in the beautiful South-West of Western
Australia. It is made up of two adjoining properties in a combined 110 acres of farmland surrounded by and containing native bush. We also have a five-acre olive orchard close to Perth, which provides us olives for oil and pickling. At Kirup Valley Farms, we are committed to environmentally sound farming practices. We farm organically, although we are not certified organic. We are located at the top of the Kirup water supply catchment area, so we are especially careful to preserve the purity of the run-off water from our property. Our icon is the Slender Tree Frog (Litoria adelaidensis), which we frequently find living amongst our crops and in our nursery shadehouses. We also see a lot of Spotted-thighed Frogs (Litoria cyclorhynca) in the greenhouse and dams. Occasionally we see a Motorbike Frog (Litoria moorei), known for it's characteristic call similar to a motorbike changing gears. We see so many of these frogs because of the many water sources we have on our property. We like to encourage them to stick around, so we do not spray pesticides on our crops. Yes, we do have imperfect crops as a result of not spraying, but we think that is a small price to pay for preserving a healthy and diverse range of beneficial insects and animals. Currently on the farm we have orchards of mixed fruit, nut, and olive trees, and we grow annual crops such as tomatoes, chillis, capsicums, and corn. We also grow small amounts of cool weather crops for local shops and cafes. Open-pollinated varieties are preferred over hybrids, and of course we never grow genetically modified crops. Some unusual varieties are sourced as seeds from overseas suppliers. We are proud of the fantastic taste and quality of our produce. We believe that healthy soil, alive with nutrients and organisms, grows the best fruits & vegetables. When we purchased the farm in 2003, it had been largely abandoned for many years. The long process of building it up to a working small farm is still ongoing. We constantly experiment with our crops and procedures, and we have big plans for the future. We hope you will visit our web page frequently to keep up with developments at Kirup Valley Farms. |
